March Nature Journal Pages

I like to create my nature journal pages for my own well-being first and foremost, as I find that I feel better when I can find a way to feel more connected with nature and take some time to write and draw most days simply as a way of taking some time out of a busy world.

It's also great to spend time looking for things in my day that I can include in my nature journal - I think it helps me to be more present in the natural world.

If you feel like you might like to do the same, I hope my March nature journal pages might inspire you for your own nature journaling...

First bees in my nature journalEarly bees spotted at the hellebores

My first nature journal entry for March is for the first bees of the year, spotted busy buzzing around my Hellebores - I wondered if it's too early for the bees? Are they some kind of solitary bee? Or honey bees? I'm glad the Hellebores are able to provide nectar for them in any case!

Spring blossom nature journal pageSpring blossom

After what's felt like a long winter, I was happy (and a bit surprised) to see this pretty blossom appearing in the village - I think it might be an ornamental cherry, or wild cherry tree. Another welcome sign of Spring!

Round wood pigeon nature journal pageRound wood pigeon fluffed up in the early morning

This gorgeous rounded wood pigeon all fluffed up on my garden fence at 7am really made me smile so I had to include him in my March nature journal! It was a chilly morning! Was s/he still asleep? Or just catching a few winks of the eye after a cold, perhaps sleepless night?

Lapwings nature journal pageLapwings calling and 'falling'

The lapwings have returned to the fields for Spring. We often only have two or four near us but this year we've counted 8! In the early morning, as we nearby, all 8 are flying, calling and tumbling, seeming to 'flip-flop' in mid-air. I hope they will stay for the season and breed - it seems unusual for all 8 to be all together if they're staying to breed, but since I've not seen 8 here before, who know..?

Starlings with murmurationStarlings calling and 'murmuring'

The early morning dog walks in the fields are so full of nature! We also spent a couple of days hearing an almighty chattering of bids without being sure what they were or where it was coming from - then as they lifted into the sky, we recognised them for starlings as they lifted up, flipped a couple of times together as a flock and then came back down to rest in the tree tops!

Ladybirds cluster nature journal pageLadybirds clustering together

Another nice little spot on the dog walk was a tiny cluster of ladybirds on the underside of a piece of wood just on the verge side. Apparently, they hibernate like this. Many years ago, my husband and I saw tiny clusters of ladybirds on every fence post as we were walking in the woods on a frozen winter day. I've since seen a few ladybirds nestled in the corner of a twig and leaf so I think they've woken up a little - I wonder if they huddle together again on cold nights..?

Jingle Bells Clematis nature journal page'Jingle Bells' Clematis

This is a pretty clematis in my garden, 'Jingle Bells', which I suddenly noticed was flowering. When we bought this, I understood it would flower around Christmas each year, so I was surprised but happy to see the flowers so late (I don't think we had a single flower last year!). It's a very pretty clematis with creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers and small curved leaves. After flowering, it forms a whiskery seedpod, hence its common-name of 'Old Man's Beard' (which I just found out!).

Tete-a-tete daffodils nature journal pageTete-a-tete daffodils nature journal page

One of my favourite things about Spring is when the first yellow daffodils appear in my garden. It's always these miniature Tete-a-tete daffodils which appear first and last for weeks. They're in a little pot so I put it by my back door so that I can see it all the time.

Starlings and sheep nature journal pageStarlings and sheep nature journal page

On a walk in the fields, I saw a flock of starlings hanging out with the sheep in the field. I wondered if they were eating the beets that the sheep were eating too? Or is it the warmth from the sheep that attracts them? Little bugs? Sheep's wool for their nests?

Celendines nature journal pageCelandines

Also spotted on a walk in the fields, tiny bright yellow Celandines in the grass. Another sign of Spring! And very nice to see!

Pieris japonica nature journal pagePieris japonica

My garden is finally coming back to life after a long winter (it feels like a long winter, anyway!). One of the flowers I've noticed are the little white flowers on the Pieris japonica shrub. Just a few, but a sign that the trees and shrubs are starting to grow now...

Little brown frog nature journal pageLittle brown 'drain frog'

On an evening dog walk up the street, I noticed a little brown frog on the drain cover. I managed to take a quick (blurry) photo before he took a big leap away! I wonder if he's lived in the drain? If not, what if he might've fallen down the drain?

Apple blossom nature journal pageApple blossom

Very excited to see a few apple blossoms on my apple tree. It lives at the bottom of the garden in a pot. Last year was the first year we had any apples from it. So hopefully if there's a few blossoms this year we might get some more apples in the autumn too. The blossoms are very pretty and pink - which I always associate pink apple blossoms with red apples!

Pink hyacinth nature journal pagePink hyacinth

It's lovely to see more flowers as I go out and about. I spotted these pretty pink hyacinths from the path. They're gorgeous flowers, but quite difficult to draw because of all the different individual little flowers which make up the flower as a whole.

Barn fire nature journal pageNature journaling about a local barn fire

In my nature journal, I do try to focus on the loveliest bits of what I see (this helps to feel gratitude for the amazing world we live in, which helps with personal well-being) but occasionally, I think you do need to turn your attention towards aspects of life or nature that are less than lovely. This nature journal page is one of those...

Sadly, there was a huge barn fire in my village (FYI: I journaled this from home afterwards to process my feelings about the event, and not as a spectator!).

I could see the flames from my window, there was a loud 'boom' as the panels of the barn cracked open, which sounded just like an explosion, and the smell of smoke for 24 hours afterwards was overpowering.

This was quite scary, with it being relatively close to my home - and very close to other people's homes in the village (not a remote location) and with the fire burning into the night while firefighters attended and smoke still drifting across the village for several days afterwards.

No people or animals were harmed due to the fire and the farmhouse was able to be saved, although obviously there's extensive damage to the barns and their contents (and of course the impact on the farming family involved).

Nature can be dangerous as well as beautiful - always filled with awe (awe-inspiring and awful) - and should be respected!

March Bergenia nature journal pageBergenia

Back to something a little happier! This bergenia is flowering in my garden, surprising me a little as I drew it flowering back in October so I wasn't expecting to see it again so soon. I think it's quite sheltered in my back garden where it is, but it gets little sunlight. It's not a particularly pretty flower (its 'Elephant Ears' leaves are its main attraction) but the lovely flash of bright pink is very welcome!

Glory of the Snow nature journal page'Glory of the Snow' - Chionodoxa/Scilla Forbesii

A very pretty little blue flower growing close to the ground. I got a little confused researching this one - I thought it was called a 'Scilla' but found it under the name 'Chionodoxa' with common name 'Glory of the Snow' and then later discovered Glory of the Snow is also known as 'Scilla Forbesii' or 'Forbes Squill', so it seems it is the same plant by different names. It's pretty anyhow!

For my final entry for my March nature journal pages, I went for another blue flower...

Blue hyacinth nature journal pageBlue hyacinth

I'd been planning on including this blue hyacinth next to the pink hyacinth from a few days ago in a nice double-page spread, but life didn't work out that way and I felt like I needed to journal about the big fire in the village instead. I still wanted to include it though, as the blue flowers are amazing - irridescent and sparkly, transitioning between a turquoise-blue to a purple-blue and that deep inky-blue stalk!

I hope you've enjoyed this tour through my March nature journal pages...

I feel like I haven't quite journaled as much as I would've liked this month, (especially as I finished a little bit earlier so that I could get my photos, video and this page done around other commitments at the very end of the month), and I think my drawings are getting messier (or as I like to think of it, faster and more relaxed)...

But I have enjoyed spotting signs of Spring and I hope that there'll be lots to inspire me in April - I'm very much looking forward to drawing some more flowers!

If you'd like inspiration and help getting started with your own nature journaling, you can take a look at my main nature journaling page here, which has got quite a bit of information about what nature journaling actually is...

I also have a free guide to getting started with your first nature journal - you can find that here...

And if you feel you need a bit more, I also have a short online course with 20 nature journaling prompts (or exercises) to get you trying out a few different ways of nature journaling to help you find out which way of nature journaling will suit you best. I call it 'Imperfect Nature Journaling' as I want us to concentrate on nature journaling as a way of de-stressing and feeling more connected with nature (not worrying about making perfect pictures or doing it 'properly' - hence my messy, 'relaxed' drawings). You can find out more about that here...

Online Nature Journaling Course

Imperfect nature journaling short online course

If you'd like to explore nature journaling more, please consider joining me for my 'Imperfect Nature Journaling' online course - I've called it this to remind us to nature journal for the process of connecting with nature to feel good and not to put pressure on ourselves to create pretty pages which can quickly ruin the fun and the benefits...

It's a series of 20 lessons which are great exercises that you can do in your own nature journal to help you try out different ideas and techniques.

This will help you get the most out of your nature journaling sessions and understand what style of nature journaling is the best for you personally.

If this sounds like something you might like, you can find out more about the course here...
